- Check the shoulder seam: Put the polo on and find where the sleeve meets the body. The seam should sit at or just past the edge of your shoulder bone, not halfway down your arm and not pulled inward toward your neck. If the seam climbs toward your neck, the polo is too small across the chest and shoulders.
- Test the chest and button placket: Button the polo and slide two fingers under the placket at the fullest part of your chest. You want light contact, not a tight pull that opens the buttons or a loose gap that stands away from your body. A visible V-shaped pull at the buttons means size up, even if the shoulders feel fine.
- Set the sleeve length: Let your arms hang naturally. The sleeve should end around mid-bicep, roughly halfway between your shoulder and elbow. Raise your arms overhead and check that the sleeve does not ride up past your upper bicep or bind at the armpit. Sleeves that stop above mid-bicep look undersized; sleeves that reach the elbow look oversized.
- Find the hem line: Stand straight and check where the hem falls. For an untucked polo, aim for around the middle of your fly or just below your belt line. For a tucked polo, you need enough length to stay in place when you raise your arms. A hem that shows your stomach when you reach up is too short for tucked wear.
- Move before you decide: Swing your arms, bend forward and sit down in the polo. Check that the collar stays flat, the placket does not gape and the fabric does not bunch tightly across your back. If the collar lifts away from your neck when you move, the neck opening is too large.
